Local PD Committee

Local Professional Development Committee

The LPDC meets monthly during the school year to assist you as you go through the process to renew your 5-year teaching license. This committee is mandated by the Ohio Department of Education to verify that teachers are participating in professional development activities. Everyone who currently holds a license and plans to renew will need to be in contact with the committee at least two times during the licensure period.

Step 1: When you receive your new (5 year) license, you must provide a new IPDP (Individual Professional Development Plan) to the committee for approval within 30 days after receiving the new license. When the committee approves your IPDP, we will return it to you with a form stating that the IPDP is approved. You are responsible to keep these in a safe place until it is time for renewal.

Step 2: The second time you must meet with the LPDC is when you are renewing your license. (Licenses may be renewed starting in January of the year they expire.) At this time, the LPDC must verify the professional development (PD) activities in which you have participated. You will need to provide the committee with a copy of your IPDP and the approval form. Along with these forms, we will need an original transcript and/ or the CEU certificates that verify your PD activities. This is a required step in the renewal process.

Step 3: Select the “IPDP Form” link to the right to download and begin creating your plan.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

1. So what is a CEU?
CEU stands for Continuing Education Unit. One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours. The state of Ohio requires every teacher to complete 18 CEU's for renewal of their license. This can be done in several ways: university credit only- 6 semester hours (or 9 quarter hours) equals 18 CEU's, 180 contact hours equals 18 CEU's, or any combination of college credit and CEU's. The committee is always willing to help you add up/ go over CEU count.

2. How can I earn CEUs?
All district-sponsored training or professional development events issue CEUs following participation. Check the "PD Event Scheduler” link to view and register for professional development opportunities. PD events are categorized as “District or “Optional” and CEUs are issued for both. Educational Service Centers (ESCs), the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and numerous other organizations offer CEUs or graduate credit for workshops, conferences, and professional development sessions.
