Dr. Eugene T.W. Sanders
Dr. Eugene T. W. Sanders is the Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent for the Sandusky City Schools in Sandusky, Ohio. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Comprehensive Social Studies, Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision, Master’s Degree in Secondary Education and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Organizational Management from Bowling Green State University. Dr. Sanders has leadership experience serving children and communities as a teacher, high school administrator, college professor, consultant, and Superintendent of Schools in Sandusky, Toledo, and Cleveland.
Dr. Sanders is recognized as a national leader in school transformation and preparing students to compete in the 21st century global economy. His transformation plan for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District was noted as one of the most efficient and elaborate reorganization plans in the nation. He created a district STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) high school on the campus of General Electric, the only one of its design in the nation. Additionally, Dr. Sanders introduced single gender academies, Science and Medicine High School, and Architectural Design and Engineering High School. Dr. Sanders’ vision also initiated Ginn Academy, an all-male high school for at-risk and talented students, Campus International at Cleveland State University, focusing on International Baccalaureate student training, and opened New Tech High Schools. He is most proud of the Closing the Achievement Gap Program that has dramatically increased the graduation rate for at-risk minority male students.
Dr. Sander’s visionary leadership has been featured on “MSNBC Morning Roundup”, and NBC “The Today Show”. He is regularly sought after as a speaker and presenter on school reform and redesign throughout the nation. He has also served as an Executive Lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Maui College.
Dr. Sanders, along with the Board of Education, faculty and staff members are coordinating the largest construction program in the history of the Sandusky City Schools. The 72 million dollar project will result in three new elementary schools and the building of the Global Education Center at the new Intermediate school. He partnered with the faculty, staff, and community to lead a successful levy campaign in November 2012. In August 2013, Dr. Sanders was honored to accept a $1 Million Dollar gift from the Dorn Foundation to support two of the district’s innovative initiatives; The Regional Center for Advanced Academic Studies and the District’s Pre-School Initiative.
Dr. Sanders has led the innovative and transformation redesign of the instructional delivery, with emphasis on customer service, by creating the following new programs, (a) The Regional Center for Advanced Academic Studies, (b) Blue Streak University, (c) The Global Internship Experience, (d) The Sandusky Digital Academy, and (c) The Great Lakes Visual and Performing Arts Academy.
Dr. Sanders is a proud 1976 graduate of Sandusky High School and is active in his church, and local civic and community activities. He has been inducted in the Sandusky High School and Erie County Hall of Achievers and was selected Superintendent of the Year by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation. He is the son of the late American Sanders Sr. and Lena M. Sanders; he is one of eleven children: all of whom graduated from Sandusky High School. He credits the success in his career to his family, faith, and school community.
