Sandusky Career Center Now Accepting Applications for New Barber Program and Cosmetology Program

Sandusky, Ohio. The Sandusky Career Center is proud to announce that the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board along with the Ohio Department of Higher Education recently approved a new Barber program to begin at the Sandusky Career Center. Both the Barber program and the longstanding Cosmetology program are now accepting applications for new students.

The Sandusky Career Center Barber program is the only of its kind within a 70-mile radius of Sandusky. Phil Parker, Sr. a local barber, will serve as the program coordinator. His son, Phil Parker, Jr. will assist as a faculty member. Both men have teaching experience at a similar school in Cleveland. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for Barbers is expected to grow 11% over the next ten years. In the North Central Ohio Region, Barbers can expect to earn anywhere from $15 – 25 dollars per hour, which does not include tips. They can set personal schedules, work as their own business owner, or work for an established salon or barbershop.

The start date for the Barber program is March 6, 2023. The deadline for students to apply is Tuesday, January 10th, 2023. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Sandusky Career Center. Students will complete the program in 12 months with graduation slated for the end of February 2024.

Additionally, the Sandusky Career Center Cosmetology program will begin on March 13, 2023, under the direction of Monica Kirksey. The 12-month Cosmetology program will be offered in the evenings Monday through Thursday from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Sandusky Career Center. The deadline to apply for the Cosmetology program is Monday, February 6, 2023.
In 2020, the Sandusky Career Center moved locations from the Sandusky High School to the former Venice Heights Elementary School. Part of this re-location included a renovation of space to serve as a brand new lab for the Cosmetology and Barber programs. The facility has two classrooms, a large lab with 20 customer stations, and separate lab space for facials, manicures, and pedicures. Both the Cosmetology and Barber programs will start to offer services to community members in early summer for a nominal fee.
Financial aid, including the Pell Grant and the Student Loan program, is available to students who qualify. To apply to either program or for financial aid assistance, please call the Sandusky Career Center at 419-984-1100 or visit the campus at 4501 Venice Heights Blvd, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
