After careful consideration, Sandusky City Schools announced that Sandusky High and Middle School students (grades 7 -12) will return to face-to-face learning on September 7th, 2021. Based on the return of these students, Sandusky City Schools has made an additional decision regarding how to keep students and faculty safe. With the rise of positive COVID-19 cases reported in Erie County, Sandusky City Schools is requiring all staff to wear face coverings while in school buildings, beginning on Tuesday, September 7th, 2021. This decision is based on the recommendation of Mr. Pete Schade, Erie County Health Commissioner, and in collaboration with district Teaching and Non-Teaching Union Presidents. At this time, face coverings are not required for students while in district buildings, however, face coverings are strongly recommended. Sandusky City Schools’ number one goal is to ensure the safety and security of all students, faculty, staff, administrators, families, and the community at large with a large focus on academic priorities. The requirement for staff to wear face coverings is the first step in the district working to ensure students are learning face-to-face. This requirement will be reviewed periodically based on trends by district officials.
The requirement of staff wearing face coverings is based on the following goals:
- To keep all SCS students, Preschool through 12th grade in school, with face-to-face learning, five days a week.
- To minimize quarantine requirements due to the wearing of face coverings.
- Align district procedures with district academic priorities, ensuring SCS students receive the best educational opportunities possible.
Dr. Eugene Sanders, Chief Executive Officer, and Superintendent stated, “Our message is clear; protect yourself and protect your fellow blue streaks. Our goal is to maintain face-to-face learning 5 days a week. Face-to-face learning is the most powerful instructional tool for students and this is what we need to do to make that happen. While district staff is required to wear face coverings while in buildings, we highly recommend students also wear face coverings. As we move through this school year, we will continue to be flexible and remain transparent with our constituents.”
