SHS BAND COVID UPDATES 8/14/2020
SHS Band Students/Parents/Guardians,
We have just received our virtual school day schedule for the High School along with more concrete details regarding other logistics related to the first quarter. The only way for us to facilitate successful live performances is to have in-person rehearsals, which this schedule does not help facilitate. After careful consideration, we felt that a change in rehearsal schedule would best serve the members of the SHS Band to be as prepared as possible for what lies ahead. I apologize that there is no perfect schedule to make everyone happy and appreciate your flexibility as we know that everything is fluid and could change at a moment’s notice. Ultimately, we are happy to have the opportunity to make music together and hope to be able to perform for the community this year.
Everything below this heading is mandatory, graded, and required for all members of the SHS Bands.
Procedures and policies related to health and safety measures will be a repeat of what the students did at Band Camp. Face masks are required. Social distancing is required. Hand sanitizing is required. Bringing and taking all necessary belongings from rehearsal is required.
If you are ill, stay home, and don’t forget to contact us via Facebook (Sandusky Band Parents), e-mail ([email protected] or [email protected]), Google Voice (419-515-6859) , or the Band App. You must have a doctor’s note/clearance to return to practice if you are too ill to attend a Band function.
Part-time Jobs or Athletic Practices are not an excuse to miss rehearsal, Athletic Games/Matches are excused. If you have an Athletic Practice scheduled between 7:00pm-8:00pm during the first nine weeks, please see Mr. Klohn so we can work out a fair resolution with your respective coach.
Please plan on arriving 10-15 minutes before rehearsal to report to your position, hand sanitize, assemble your instrument, warm up, tune, and answer your COVID-19 symptoms survey to begin rehearsal at 7pm! To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late.
UPDATED SHS Band Rehearsal Schedule
Monday, August 24th through Wednesday, August 26th – 7:00pm-9:00pm - SHS Back Parking Lot (or North Lawn)
Thursday, August 27th – 7:00pm-8:00pm – SHS Back Parking Lot (or North Lawn)
Our class time for the first 9 weeks – Mondays through Thursdays – August 31st through October 29th – 7:00pm-8:00pm – SHS Back Parking Lot (or North Lawn)
These rehearsals are where you will earn your first quarter grade and your attendance will be taken and reported to the school for accountability purposes.
Students will not be required to be on Google Meet during the 8:00am-8:45am time on Mondays and Thursdays, except in special circumstances.
Grading – All rehearsals from August 24th through September 4th will count toward your students’ “Summer Band” Grade – 10% of the total first quarter grade.
All rehearsals on and after September 7th, and all performances, will count toward your students’ first quarter Grade – 30% for rehearsals, 40% for performances.
Band Camp counted toward 10% of your students’ first quarter grade, and the remaining 10% of your students’ first quarter grade will be covered by Music Check, which happen at the Director’s discretion.
Any conflicting issues with rehearsals must be communicated 7 days in advance of the rehearsal in conflict, any conflicts with performances must be communicated 14 days in advance of the performance in conflict. See the 2020 SHS Band Handbook for more specifics regarding our attendance policy.
Percussion and Sousaphones:
Percussion and Sousaphones should enter the building from the Side Band Doors (by the Weight Room) and should exit the Athletic Entrance doors if we are in the SHS Back Parking Lot. If we are in the North Lawn, these students may enter and exit at the Side Band Doors. Hand sanitizing upon arrival and at dismissal is still mandatory. Drum line may use stands on occasion but should not plan on using them at every rehearsal. Please make sure you arrive early enough to get your equipment and music and be set up outside ready to go for a 7:00pm downbeat.
The Marching Bands of the Sandusky Bay Conference are only performing at home games this season – this is a league wide policy. Halftime will only be 10 minutes long, so there would not be enough time for two Bands to perform at a given Halftime.
Friday, August 28th, 2020 – Varsity Football vs. Edison – Strobel Field – 7pm
Friday, September 4th, 2020 – No Performance Scheduled – Rehearsal only on Monday (8/31) and Wednesday (9/2)

*Additional Fridays for Playoff Football are possible, so please keep Fridays after October 9th open on your calendar for additional performances.
**If approved. Pep Band performance. Participants limited and determined by student sign up. Most likely altered rehearsal schedule during those weeks, which will be communicated when the performance is approved. Additional Community Performances could also be scheduled during the last few weeks of October, depending on how the football team does in the playoffs.
Performance Details and Additional Information
Call times will be announced when we get closer to a given performance. We will probably report earlier than normal to have a full or partial dress rehearsal for the evening. Stay tuned for more details.
Students will wear their Summer Band Uniform – Band polo, khaki shorts/capris, and tennis shoes – to all performances. We will wear khaki pants and layers when it gets cold. Band Raincoats will be issued for rainy, snowy, or cold outdoor performances. Mrs. Risner will let Auxiliaries know what they are wearing for a given performance.
At the release of this message, spectators have not yet been permitted to attend sporting events or concerts/performances. If that changes, we will be sure to communicate that to you. You will still be able to see and hear the Band perform via live stream on a platform to be announced. We are also awaiting any further instructions on Fall Contact Sports, like Football, which are slated to be released by Governor DeWine and the OHSAA next Tuesday.
We will know more about what Band will look like during the second quarter once we get into October, and the structure of what we do will change whether or not we move into some kind of in-person learning after the first quarter.
If you have any questions or concerns, please make a point to speak with Mr. Klohn in person so we can work toward a solution. We look forward to making the best of this year, pandemic and all, with your students and thank you for your support toward making the SHS Bands the best that they can be.
Mr. Klohn & Mr. Barringer
